This Hannya mask , or Hanya as it is also called, is a very popular motif in tattoo art, but it is often  misunderstood or misinterpreted.

The word hannya itself is the Sino-Japanese word for praina, which represents wisdom and knowledge, so on the one hand, symbolically it can be interpreted in this light. On the OTHER hand, ......

Hannya masks depict a woman so overcome with envy and vengeance that she takes on the form of a demon overcome with jealousy and anger. Hence the title of this piece: "Scorned" from the well known saying, "Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned" 

I consider myself a feminist, so treat all sisters with respect, otherwise it might be YOU on the receiving end of the furious anger of the Hannya!
